I don’t want to alarm or scare you, but your patio door is the most likely place for an intruder to break into your home. There are a number a reasons why this door is selected. It is usually on the back of the house, where less people will see someone breaking in. It’s also a door that has heavy foot traffic and is often left unlocked. But something that you probably never thought of is that your lock is flawed or loose. Patio door locks have a challenge that other locks don’t face. The force to open a sliding door is completely parallel to the way the door locks. This causes a lot of tension and pressure on the lock itself.
Over time the lock will become weak and loose. And this is where the real problem lies. When you have a loose lock it is much easier to pick. You don’t have to be smart or intelligent to do it either. It’s really quite simple. Sometimes if you jerk on the door quick enough the lock will pop right open. These are things that I’ve personally done with my own sliding door and it shocked me. I didn’t feel safe with this type of setup.
I thought I’d show you some locks that you might find useful because they really will protect you and take away the anxiety of a door that might not be up to a high standard for security.
Sliding Patio Door Locks
I have a picture to the right of the type of lock that I really like. This is a Guardian lock and if you can’t make out exactly what is going on in the picture, I’ll give you a description. The way the lock works is that attaches to the back of the sliding door that moves. A dead bolt is pushed up into lock (hole), so that means you won’t be able to physically pull the door open. This is something that you put on the inside of your home, so that means you have to be home to unlock it.
This is best for night time security when you’re sleeping. It doesn’t matter if your regular lock is picked or broken. The door is physically restrained from moving and opening. And the only real way to get around the lock is to be on the inside of the home. And really, for most intruders this is just too much work and they’ll leave.
This also works as a nice child proof patio door lock. If you have a pool outside of the patio door then you don’t want your child unlocking the door and walking out there unsupervised. This particular lock is at the top of the door, so an adult has to be around to unlock it.
Keyed Patio Door Locks
When it comes to patio door locks that allow you to use a key to lock and unlock them, it can be difficult to make a proper choice. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of these locks on the market. Over time I was able to determine that there is one brand that stands out against the rest. It is MAG Engineering. It doesn’t sound like a business that would make locks, but they do. They actually make pretty sophisticated and smart ones.
